CBD and anxiety… what can be proven?

With many of the population feeling increasingly concerned about health, money, job security and the juggles of work and family life of late, interest in CBD has grown. Due to the rise in popularity of CBD, it continues to be a buzz word in the media, and new consumers are looking to understand the effects that it can have on anxiety levels.  Whilst nothing can be medically proven, there have been, and continue to be, several studies looking at the effect of CBD and anxiety.

CBD and anxiety

CBD is commonly used for anxiety. In fact, the CBD market insights company, the Brightfield Group in America, state that 53% of CBD users in their surveys use it for that reason.

CBD is thought to act on CB1 and CB2 receptors in the body that can be found in the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. How CBD works with the receptors isn’t fully known or understood at present, but it is considered that it possibly alters serotonin signals. Serotonin is a chemical in the body which transmits messages between nerve cells and contributes to wellbeing and happiness, amongst other functions. Low levels of serotonin are often associated with depression and anxiety in the body and medicine is often prescribed for that reason.

As with most CBD research, nothing can be medically proven at this time and controlled clinical studies would be required to prove the correlation. However, in the studies which have taken place around the world, the role of CBD has pointed to a calming effect. In a study researching the role of CBD in anxiety and sleep, 79% of patients tested saw their anxiety scores decrease within the first month and remain decreased during the duration of the study.

How to use CBD for anxiety

There are a lot of factors dependent on every individual body, so at Sativa Gold, we generally advise to start with low amounts and increase if required. You could keep a diary of how much you take and when and see if and how your symptoms alleviate. It is generally recommended to consume consistently daily and at the same times of day to maintain the effectiveness.

These factors also mean it can be taken at work, when travelling or whenever fits best within each individual’s day.
